make a difference

flicker photo

I am a firm believer that each and every person can make a difference in someone's life, someone's world - actually, when we make a difference in one person's life, we are making a difference in the world. I believe in being a giver - and one can NEVER give too much!!!

Being blessed with the most generous father anyone could have - who was also the wisest man I have ever known - not only told me to be a giving person, but showed me every day by example. He never sat on a church pew that I can recall, yet he displayed more compassion, understanding and generosity than anyone who I ever knew who went to church. I never heard him criticize or say anything bad about another person. And he NEVER NEVER saw anyone - no matter their religious views, beliefs, skin color, or nationality anything other than a human being. I was taught to embrace others individuality, to think outside my own box. Dad believed that if we open our hearts and minds and allow others to teach us their ways and beliefs, it will enlighten us and allow us to become more of who we are meant to be.

I have a long way to go before I become half the person my father was, (and I may never) but, he taught me well, and to always stand up for another, and that, I will do! He taught me that I am not put on the earth for pure enjoyment, but to help others and make a difference in the life of another.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. ~Dr. Seuss

Knowing all that, we can still make n awful ot of mistakes, right? It's a blessing really to be reminded ever once in a while by posts like yours!
Not saying bad things about other people - not always so easy. I sometimes have to stop and think (and bite my tongue) not to get caught in this flow of criticism around me.

But sometimes I feel people (including me) try to avoid criticizing others in order not to be criticized. On the other hand, it's easier to understand other people mistakes if you have made the same ones.

Great post!

What a wonderful tribute to your father...if the world knew his teachings, it would be a better place.

Your father sounds like he was a very intelligent and caring man. It's no surprise, then, that he raised such an intelligent and caring daughter!

Is that Dr. Seuss quote from 'The Lorax'? I love that book! And I know that it made a difference in the way that I think about pollution and our planet, being the cautionary tale that it is.

Nice post, Six!

Hi Sixpence! What an uplifting post! I have a sneaking suspicion that you're a great deal like your Dad in that you have empathy and are open and accepting of other people, three wonderful gifts! and the three kindest gifts to receive.

What a wonderful quote to end and what a wonderful entry - I love my father - he sounds a bit like yours. I hope he is still around when I finally have some kids as his wisdom is invaluable...I hope my kids are as lucky and have a father like him...though as much as I love my current boyfriend, I wonder... I hope your dad knows how much you love him. He sounds very special and has certainly helped to shape you! xxx

Thanks so much everyone for the super comments! You are all so very kind.

I was blessed with having wonderful parents, as I hope all of were also.

The one thing we can for sure do in this life is...be kind to others and offer our help when it is within our ability to do so. If everyone did only that, I have no doubt we could heal the world.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!!

Sending everyone big hugs and lots of love. xoxoxo
