Yes, adding water will help. Also if you have a way to aerate the water that will increase the oxygen levels.
Sometimes we have had a stock pond "turn over" from the heat. The changing of the water layers cause a gigantic fish kill. If they are in an aquarium, take some water out and add cooler. If in a small water garden, stick the water hose in and let it run over.
